Whole-Home Remodel, Part 2: Hardwood Flooring and a New Subfloor in McKinney, TX

Part two of a whole-house remodel in McKinney: a second layer of hardwood hiding under the first, a worn plank subfloor, and a quiet, stable new floor.

The Situation

Today we are looking at another part of the home remodel we did in McKinney, specifically the flooring throughout the house. This is part two of the project; you can see part one, the kitchen, on its own page.

The Scope of Work

With the home ready to be remodeled, we started removing the old hardwood floor, and lo and behold, there was a surprise waiting for us underneath: a second hardwood floor!

The surprise: a second layer of hardwood hiding under the first.

The homeowner had complained that the old floor made a lot of noise. That can be caused by a number of things, with movement in the old floor, rubbing between layers, improper fastening, and moisture or expansion issues being the most common. These types of surprises happen, and after discussing the options with the homeowner, it was decided that this second layer of flooring was coming out as well.

Once the second layer was removed, we could see more issues in the original subfloor. It was an old plank subfloor in poor condition, with some bad transitions to other areas of the home.

A troubling transition in the old plank subfloor.

With the goal being a quiet, stable floor, we tore out the old plank subfloor as well and replaced it with a plywood subfloor. This has a number of advantages, but the biggest two are that plywood creates a more continuous surface with fewer boards to move and rub, and fewer gaps also means fewer drafts, with fewer pathways for air to enter.

Finally, the hardwood floor was installed, and the results were both quiet and beautiful.
